Why We Build Our Forensic Workstations on AMD Threadripper PRO 7000

🔍 Your bottleneck isn't the software. It's the hardware underneath it.

Ask any examiner where their day actually goes and it isn't analysis — it's waiting. Waiting for a case to process. Waiting for an index to build. Waiting for a second case to finish before the urgent one can start. Modern forensic suites like Magnet AXIOM, FTK, and X-Ways are built to work in parallel — the question is whether your workstation can feed them. That's why our current workstation lineup is built on AMD's Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX series, and why we think it's the right platform for Canadian labs right now.

Cores: the currency of casework

The Threadripper PRO 7000 WX series runs from 12 cores up to the 96-core, 192-thread 7995WX — the most cores AMD has ever put in a workstation processor. Our flagship builds run the 7975WX: 32 cores, 64 threads, boosting to 5.3 GHz, because it hits the point where processing, indexing, and verification all run at once without stepping on each other.

What that means in a lab:

- Process one case while you examine another. Evidence processing is multi-threaded; core count is what lets a workstation chew through a 4TB image in the background while you work a priority file in the foreground.

- Virtual machines without the penalty. Running a suspect image in a VM, a clean analysis VM, and your host tools simultaneously stops being a compromise.

- Faster turns on everything CPU-bound: database carving, thumbnail and video processing, OCR, and the CPU stages of password-recovery workflows — while your GPU handles the bulk hashing it's best at.

Memory: 8 channels, ECC, up to 2TB

On the WRX90 platform, Threadripper PRO 7000 supports 8-channel DDR5 ECC Registered memory, up to 2TB — roughly four times the memory bandwidth of a dual-channel desktop. For forensic work, that's not a spec-sheet trophy:

- RAM forensics — volatile memory captures keep growing; holding and analyzing them in memory is faster than paging off a drive.

- Big cases stay loaded. Large AXIOM and X-Ways cases with millions of artifacts behave very differently when the working set lives in RAM.

PCIe lanes: where Threadripper quietly wins

Desktop platforms run out of PCIe lanes fast — one GPU, two NVMe drives, and you're sharing bandwidth or dropping cards. Threadripper PRO 7000 on WRX90 offers up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes. A forensic workstation can run a high-end GPU, multiple NVMe drives at full speed, additional storage controllers, and hardware write-blocking — simultaneously, with nothing throttled. Imaging to one drive, processing off another, and exporting to a third is a normal Tuesday, not a juggling act.

Built for the way examiners actually work

Spec sheets are generic. These are the platform features that change a forensic workday:

- Two exhibits at once. With 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes and multiple NVMe drives at full speed, you can image one device through a hardware write blocker while a second acquisition — or the hash verification of the last one — runs in parallel. In a unit carrying a device backlog, that overlap is cases cleared per shift, not minutes saved per image.

- A workstation you can vouch for. Defence counsel can and does ask how you know your own machine was clean. Threadripper PRO's security stack — AMD Secure Processor, secure boot, Shadow Stack, and Memory Guard (full memory encryption) — means the analysis platform itself has an integrity story: a verified boot chain, and case data encrypted in memory while you work.

- Validate once, deploy the fleet. Labs validate a configuration before it touches evidence — that work is expensive. AMD PRO platforms are built for long, stable lifecycles, so the build you validated this year is the build you can order next year. Every seat identical, one validation covering all of them.

- Recovery-rig headroom in the same tower. The lane budget supports multiple GPUs alongside your storage, so the same workstation that processes cases can run serious password-recovery work — no separate cracking box, no moving evidence between machines.

- Manageable by your IT section. AMD PRO Manageability gives police IT standards-based remote management, so the machines pass an institutional security review instead of becoming exceptions to it.

The lineup at a glance

| Threadripper PRO 7975WX | 32 / 64 | Up to 5.3 GHz | Our flagship — heavy caseloads, parallel processing |

| Threadripper PRO 7985WX | 64 / 128 | Up to 5.1 GHz | Lab hubs, multi-case and VM-heavy work |

| Threadripper PRO 7995WX | 96 / 192 | Up to 5.1 GHz | Maximum throughput — server-class workloads |

Why the 7000 series, and why now

The 7000 series is a mature, proven platform: stable drivers and firmware, validated forensic software, and availability without the early-adopter tax that comes with a brand-new launch. For a lab spending public money, that combination — top-tier performance on a platform with a track record — is exactly the right side of the curve.
